Christian Petersen/Getty Images(RALEIGH, N.C.) -- The Carolina Hurricanes have hired Detroit Red Wings assistant Bill Peters as their new head coach, the club announced on Thursday.

The 48-year-old Peters will replace Kirk Muller, who was fired May 5 after compiling a record of 80-80-27 over three seasons. Carolina hasn’t made the playoffs since 2009.

Peters has been with the Red Wings for the last three seasons, working primarily with defensemen and penalty-killers. Prior to joining Detroit, he served as head coach of the Rockford Ice Hogs of the American Hockey League (AHL), leading them to consecutive 40 win seasons in 2008-09 and 2009-10.

Peters will be introduced during a news conference on Friday.
