Mike McGinnis/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- The resurgent San Francisco Giants will have to keep up their winning ways without first baseman Brandon Belt of the next 4-6 weeks as he recovers from a fractured thumb.

Belt was struck by a pitch from Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Paul Maholm in the second inning on the team's game on Friday. He wound up leaving Dodger Stadium that night to catch a flight back to the Bay Area to get it checked out.

"When I looked at it, I said, 'That is not good,'" Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "It was just locked up... You lost your first baseman and that's a blow for us. He fits in the heart of our order. It's the old bittersweet thing."

The 26-year-old Belt was in the midst of the breakout season the team had been hoping to see for years.

In 35 games this season, Belt was hitting .264 with 9 home runs and drove in 18 runs. His 9 home runs is tied for third in the National League.
