Germany Advances to Fourth Straight World Cup Semifinal

Fri, 04 Jul 2014 23:44:00 +0000

Amin Mohammad Jamali/Getty Images(RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil) -- Mats Hummels' early goal was all the Germans needed, as they advance to their fourth straight semifinal by defeating France 1-0.

Hummels scored in the 12th minute when he directed a header off of the crossbar and into the net past French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Hummels becomes the only defender to score two goals this World Cup.

While France lost, it put on a good show with 13 shots on goal, including one in the last seconds of the game by star striker Karim Benzema. German goalie Manuel Neuer was able to get a hand on Benzema's final shot and deflect it away, sending Germany to its 13th World Cup Semifinal.

Germany will meet the winner of the match between Brazil and Columbia. The semifinal will take place Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. Eastern. You can watch that on ESPN.
