Chris Chambers/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The Los Angeles Lakers have signed Byron Scott to a four-year, $17 million contract to be their new head coach, according to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne.

Scott's name has been affiliated with the job for months now, but ESPN reports that the Lakers wanted to wait to fill out their roster before hiring a coach.

Scott is familiar with the organization serving as a TV analyst for the team last season.

Scott also played for the Lakers for 11 seasons. His last season  with the team (1996-97) was Kobe Bryant's first. Bryant has stated that during that season Scott served as a mentor to him.

Scott has coached 13 NBA seasons split between the Nets, Hornets and Cavaliers. During that time he compiled a 416-521 record and led the Nets to back-to-back championship appearances in 2002 and 2003.
