(NEW YORK) -- The Dallas Cowboys will release backup quarterback Kyle Orton, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
Releasing Orton saves the Cowboys $3.25 million this season.
The 31-year-old Orton had considered retiring after the 2013 season and has already been fined $70,000 for missing all of the team's minicamp workouts.
Orton played in three and started one game for Dallas last year. During his eight season NFL career, Orton has compiled a 35-35 record while passing for 15,019 yards, 83 touchdowns, and 59 interceptions.
This offseason, the Cowboys signed former Cleveland Browns' quarterback Brandon Weeden as an insurance policy in case Orton chose to retire. Weeden will now compete with Caleb Hanie and Dustin Vaughan for the backup job.
