Mark Serota/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The Montreal Canadiens weren't letting star defenseman P.K. Subban go anywhere as he and team have agreed on an eight-year extension through the 2021-2022 season.

ESPN is reporting that Subban's new deal will pay him $72 million total, with an average annual value of $9 million.

"We are very pleased to have reached a long term agreement with P.K. Subban," general manager Marc Bergevin said in a statement. "This agreement helps consolidate the future of our team. A key element of our group of young veterans, P.K. plays with a high level of intensity every time he steps onto the ice. Despite his young age, he carries a great deal of experience and brings contagious energy to the team. Defensemen of his level are a rare commodity in the NHL."

Subban was a restricted free agnet this season after coming off a two-year deal worth $5.75 million.

In 82 games this past season, the 25-year-old Subban scored 10 goals and also had 43 assists. His 53 points were the  sixth-most by a defenseman this past season.
