(INDIANAPOLIS) -- FBI agents arrested an Indiana man with a concealed carry permit for making threats against House Speaker John Boehner. Brandon J. Thompson, 32, of New Castle, IN was arrested Thursday night for allegedly making email and telephone threats against Speaker Boehner.
According to a criminal complaint filed in federal court in Indianapolis, Thompson was angry about unemployment benefits not being extended.
In one email message received in Speaker Boehner’s office on March 31, Thompson allegedly wrote, “WELL YOU DRUNK JOHN BIN LADEN ITS TIME TO TAKE YOU OUT [expletive] YOU WANT TO PLAY WITH 2.7 MILLION PEOPLES LIVES I AM GOING TO TAKE YOURS AND YOU WILL NEVER SEE IT COMING WITH MY SNIPER RIFLE WERE YOU SOON:-)”
Thompson admitted to sending the emails and leaving threatening phone messages on the voicemail of a cell phone belonging to Speaker Boehner’s wife, according to the complaint.
In one message, according to court documents, Thompson’s message stated, “I’m coming after your oompa loompa [expletive] husband. He shoulda… he should extended unemployment insurance. Now, it’s too late. Imma rip his [expletive] head off.”
According to the FBI affidavit, Thompson holds a permit carry a concealed firearm and has no prior criminal history, though he does have five protective orders filed against him in Henry County, Indiana. Thompson had been receiving unemployment checks for $341.00 per week until his last check came on January 11, 2014.
“Free speech is the cornerstone of our democracy but threats of violence have no place in our civil society. People who are inclined to make them need to know that they violate the law and they will be aggressively pursued,” U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Hogsett said in a statement.
Unemployment benefits ended for 1.3 million Americans after the House of Representatives failed to pass an extension.
