(WASHINGTON) -- Rep. Pete Sessions is bowing out of the race to replace Eric Cantor as House Majority Leader, the Texas lawmaker announced Thursday.
In a statement, Sessions said his campaign would have done more harm than good.
"Today, it became obvious to me that the measures necessary to run a successful campaign would have created unnecessary and painful division within our party," he said. "At this critical time, we must remain unified as a Republican Conference."
Sessions added he is "ready and willing" to work in advancing "the conservative agenda that the American people demand and deserve."
The decision places California Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy as the front-runner for Cantor's position.
