(WASHINGTON) -- President Obama called German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday to discuss the situation in eastern Ukraine.
The two leaders expressed support for diplomacy and discussed potential routes to a sustainable ceasefire. According to a readout of the call, Obama and Merkel -- echoing a call made from U.S. Vice president Joe Biden to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko -- called for a plan that would both be "respected by the separatists and fully supported by Russia."
Both Obama and Merkel agreed that the U.S. and Europe should impose further sanctions against Russia if steps toward deescalation are not taken "in short order."
