Montana Sen. John Walsh Abandons Senate Race After Plagiarism Scandal

Thu, 07 Aug 2014 21:59:02 +0000

walsh.senate.gov(WASHINGTON) -- Sen. John Walsh, Democrat of Montana, is abandoning his fall election bid in the wake of a plagiarism scandal that shook his campaign late last month.

Two Democratic sources confirm Walsh's decision to ABC News.

Walsh's Democratic campaign was shaken last month by allegations of plagiarizing during his time at the Army War College in 2007.

In a statement to supporters, he said, "It is time for us all to return to the real issues of this election."

Walsh had been under heavy pressure to leave the race, including calls from party officials and editorials in his state's newspapers. He intends to serve out the rest of his appointed term, one official tells ABC News.

Republicans are eyeing that Montana seat as one of six needed to win control of the Senate this fall.
