Arkansas Judge Strikes Down Gay Marriage Ban

Sat, 10 May 2014 17:48:47 +0000

iStock/Thinkstock(LITTLE ROCK, Ark.) -- An Arkansas judge opened the door for gay marriage in the state Friday after striking down a ban on same-sex unions.

Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza ruled the 2004 voter-approved amendment had "no rational reason" for preventing gay couples from marrying. The ban was found to be an unconstitutional narrowing of the definition of equality.

The decision took effect immediately, with an Arkansas clerk issuing the state's first gay marriage license on Saturday morning.
