(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) -- The father of a student gunned down in the Santa Barbara rampage raged through tears at the “insanity” that left six students dead along with the gunman.
Richard Martinez’s outburst came outside a sheriff’s department after his son Chris, 20, was confirmed to be among the shooting victims.
“Our family has a message for every family out there. You don’t think it will happen to your child, until it does,” Martinez said. Choking on tears, he added, “His death has left our family lost and broken.”
“Chris died because of craven, irresponsible politicians and the NRA. They talk about gun rights. What about Chris’ right to live? When will this insanity stop? When will enough people say stop this madness,” Martinez said.
“We should say to ourselves, not one more,” he said before collapsing in tears and walking off.
Martinez says he talked to his son just 45 minutes before he was shot and killed inside the I V Mart.
He said his son’s roommate tried to revive him, but he died at the scene.
Elliot Rodger, a lonely student who posted YouTube videos detailing his inability to get a girlfriend, is the suspect in the shooting. He died of a gunshot wound to the head.
