Seth Meyers Says He Will Try to Be 'Fair' as Emmys Host

Lloyd Bishop/NBC(LOS ANGELES) -- Now that the nominations for the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced, the focus shifts to the actual ceremony, which will be staged next month.

This year's host, Seth Meyers, says his opening monologue during the broadcast will be key for him. Speaking with the media at a Television Critics Association summer press tour panel in Beverly Hills over the weekend, he quipped, "Having been a nominee and a guest of the Emmys in the audience, that first 10 minutes is the best time to get the audience to laugh because as the night progresses more and more people are disappointed."

Meyers promises he won't be offensive as host. Part of that has to do with the influence of his boss at Saturday Night Live and now Late Night, Lorne Michaels.

He explained that Michaels "always stresses, try not to tell a joke about somebody that you then would want to leave the cocktail party if they showed up."

Meyers said a joke can be a "little negative" as long as it's also "fair."

NBC, which airs Meyers' Late Night, will broadcast the Emmys on August 25.
