(NEW YORK) -- The National Fire Protection Association released its annual report on Wednesday, which showed that more firefighters were killed on duty in 2013 than in the previous four years.
In 2013, the NFPA said, 97 firefighters were killed battling fires. That figure had fallen from 106 such deaths in 2007 to just 64 in 2012. The NFPA says that the Yarnell Hill fire in Arizona and the fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas, which killed 19 and nine firefighters, respectively, were largely responsible for the increased death toll.
Dr. Rita Fahy, the NFPA's manager of fire databases and systems, said that while 2013 was the fifth consecutive year in which the total number of firefighter deaths was below 100, the figure was still too high. "Our hope is that next year's report reflects the general decline in firefighter deaths we've seen in the past few years," she said.
