(SAN DIEGO) -- In Southern California, firefighters are in a desperate battle to save homes as at least nine wildfires continue to burn in San Diego County.
The relentless inferno that began Tuesday has driven thousands of people from their homes, prompting Governor Jerry Brown to declare a state of emergency for the county.
According to fire officials, the situation is being made worse by soaring temperatures and canyons full of dry brush from months of drought.
One resident in Carlsbad, north of San Diego, described flames 30 to 40 feet in the air.
Officials said well over 11,000 calls went out to homes, businesses, and cell phones in Carlsbad to order an evacuation.
Meanwhile, east of Carlsbad in San Marcos, 21,000 homeowners have been ordered to evacuate as well as everyone on the campus of California State University, San Marcos.
