Thu, 08 May 2014 01:44:53 +0000

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(CENTENNIAL, Colo.) -- Authorities announced a nationwide crackdown on the popular synthetic marijuana known as spice, or K-2, on Wednesday.

In the past year, 200 people in Colorado alone were sent to hospital emergency rooms after using synthetic marijuana. Federal agents said on Wednesday that nine people were indicted amid accusations of running a synthetic drug ring. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency's Special Agent in Charge Barbara Roach said the drug came from China and was sold under a number of different names.

While the synthetic marijuana can be found in stores, the DEA says, it is not legal.
