Smith Co. Jail expansion update 5-7-14

SMITH CO., May 7, 2014— The Smith County Jail is undergoing renovation, thanks to a voter-approved bond issue, according to Smith County Judge Joel Baker.

The low-risk facility was expanded, with additions of a new kitchen, new laundry facility, and new video-visitation area. This allowed for the focus to switch to the main jail facility, which is being renovated and expanded to include an additional 384 beds.

Judge Baker says the expansion will allow Smith County to house more inmates, rather than paying to have them housed in other counties.

KYYK’s Gary Richards spoke with Judge Baker about the bond issue, the expansion, and the effect on taxpayers. Click below for more.
